The cutting tool for thread M20 x 2.5 mm is a single tooth cutter for milling metric threads on CNC milling machines and machining centres. It is entirely made from sintered carbide, a hard material commonly used for precision machining tools. Unlike a tap, the cutter does not cut the thread all at once, but gradually creates it by moving along the helix according to the machine's programme. The cutting head with a single row of thread profile is at the end of the tool, followed by a narrower neck and cylindrical shank. The tool has a silver surface.

  • Thread M20 x 2.5 mm — the cutter is designed for a metric thread with a nominal diameter of 20 mm and a pitch of 2.5 mm, which is the basic coarse pitch for M20. M20 threads are used, for example, in screw connections of large machine parts, load-bearing frames, or steel structures.
  • Thread profile series — the cutting head carries a single tooth with the shape of the thread. The thread is therefore created gradually, and its length is determined by the tool's path in the programme, not by the length of the cutting part.
  • Vertical feed with pitch — during one revolution around the thread axis, the cutter moves vertically by 2.5 mm. This movement is called helical interpolation, and the machine's control system must support it.
  • Solid carbide — the shank, neck, and cutting head are made from a single piece of sintered carbide. The material is harder than tool steel and maintains the precise shape of the tooth well.
  • Grooves in the head — the cutting head features longitudinal grooves visible in the image. They form cutting edges and create space for chip removal.
  • Shank diameter of 14 mm — the cylindrical shank has a diameter of 14 mm and is clamped into a collet or holder of the same diameter. The narrower neck between the shank and head allows the cutting part to enter a hole.
  • Direction according to the programme — right or left thread is produced according to the direction of the helix set in the programme. The same tool can thus produce both directions of thread M20 x 2.5 mm.
  • Pre-drilling for M20 — the internal thread is milled into a pre-drilled hole. Choose the drill diameter according to the tables for thread M20 and clear the hole of chips and burrs before milling.
  • Gentle cutting conditions — the cutting head can be damaged under overload. Set appropriate feeds and speeds, and clamp the cutter firmly and accurately. When not in use, store it in a case to protect the tooth edge from damage.
