Overview
4-Jaw Independent Lathe Chuck 5 Inches with Reversible Jaws and Clamping from 48 to 125 mm Externally and 7 to 57 mm Internally Silver

The independent chuck with four jaws differs from the self-centering type in that each jaw moves independently, allowing it to hold workpieces that are not round or symmetrical. The outer jaws grip diameters of 48 to 125 mm, making the chuck suitable for larger pieces and semi-finished products from bar stock. When the jaws are rotated, the range shifts to 7 to 57 mm for internal clamping, for example, through a drilled hole or cavity of the workpiece. The body diameter of 12.4 cm corresponds to the 5-inch size, which is typical for smaller workshop lathes. Adjusting each jaw individually allows the workpiece to be offset, should the hole or seating need to be eccentric.

  • Independent Jaws – each jaw is adjusted separately, allowing the chuck to grip square, flat, or irregular pieces that could not be held in a self-centering design, and the workpiece can be offset from the axis of rotation
  • Reversible Design – the jaws can be rotated and switched to change clamping from external to internal depending on how the workpiece needs to be held, meaning one chuck can handle both situations without needing a second unit
  • External Range – 48 to 125 mm, which is suitable for common pieces that are turned externally around the circumference, from smaller shafts to wider flanges and castings
  • Internal Range – 7 to 57 mm, which is useful for tubes, rings, and parts with a hole, where the outer surface needs to be machined and external clamping would not be possible
  • Chuck Diameter – 12.4 cm in a 5-inch design, suitable for smaller and medium-sized lathes without taking up unnecessary space on the machine
  • Metal Construction – the metal body with a central hole and grooves for the jaws forms the base on which the workpiece is clamped during standard turning, and the grooves guide the jaws throughout their travel

Contents of the package:

  • 1x chuck
  • 4x screws
  • 1x chuck key

The independent chuck is suitable for a workshop where not only round bars are machined, but also castings, flat parts, and pieces with irregular outlines. The jaws are tightened with a key gradually, allowing the workpiece to be aligned precisely where needed, even at the cost of longer preparation before actual turning. The delivery includes four screws and a chuck key, so nothing additional needs to be purchased, and the jaws can be tightened immediately after unpacking. The specification of 3000 revolutions per minute stamped on the body indicates the maximum speed for which the chuck is designed, covering typical work on a workshop lathe. The silver finish with two clamping ranges makes the chuck a versatile holder for tasks involving various shapes of workpieces where a single fixed setting would not suffice. Before starting the machine, it is advisable to check the workpiece with a dial gauge and adjust the tightening of the jaws if necessary, as with independent clamping, alignment is fully in the operator's hands. This freedom is the main advantage of independent jaws, as it allows for clamping parts that cannot otherwise be centred, and machining them precisely as required. After finishing work, the jaws are loosened and the grooves are wiped clean of chips to ensure a clean fit during the next clamping.
