Christmas tablecloths are made from cotton, linen or polyester. Polyester and stain-resistant fabrics repel dirt and are easy to wash, while cotton and linen have a natural, traditional feel. The right size matters: a tablecloth should hang about 20 to 30 cm over the edge of the table on each side. They come in rectangular, square, round and oval shapes.
Table runners are narrow strips of fabric laid down the centre of the table, on their own or over a tablecloth. Candlesticks, an Advent wreath or Christmas centrepieces stand out beautifully on them. Placemats protect the tabletop and mark out each guest's place.
When choosing, it is worth matching the colours of the textiles to your tableware and decorations. Red with gold or green is a classic, white with silver looks elegant and linen with natural motifs feels rustic. Tablecloths, runners and cloth napkins can be washed after the holidays and used year after year.
