Overview
Coffea arabica Castillo Seeds 20 pcs fruitful Colombian coffee plant for growing at home on a windowsill

Coffea arabica 'Castillo' represents a valuable choice for growers who want to try a coffee plant as both an ornamental and useful plant in their home. This bulk package of 20 seeds provides the opportunity to nurture a small group of young coffee plants for growth comparison, gifting purposes, or staggered planting in various indoor conditions. The Castillo variety was bred in Colombia as part of the Cenicafé programme and has become the foundation of the modern coffee industry in this country. It belongs to the more resilient and highly productive forms of the Coffea genus.

The indoor plant forms a compact tree that reaches a height of around two metres when mature. Branches grow horizontally from the central trunk, giving the plant its characteristic coffee tree habit. Glossy leaves with visible veins and wavy edges form a dense dark green crown that is decorative in itself even without fruits. In spring and summer, small white flowers appear on the plant in clusters of several, which gradually transform into the characteristic coffee cherries.

For growing from seeds, it is important to meet several conditions. The seeds should first be soaked in warm water for 24 to 36 hours and then sown into a permeable substrate enriched with a small amount of sand or perlite. Germination occurs at a temperature between 26 and 30 °C and air humidity above 70%. Young coffee plants grow slowly but gradually expand, and after 1 to 2 years, they form neat trees with an initial height of around 30 to 50 cm.

The larger seed package is suitable for growers who plan to nurture several coffee plants for various purposes or simply want to increase the chances of successful germination of this species, whose seeds have limited viability. Staggered ripening of fruits in different groups of plants allows for harvesting coffee cherries throughout the year instead of a sudden crop. Fruits ripening to a deep red colour can be processed in the traditional way – removing the fleshy covering, drying the seeds, and after several months of fermentation and roasting, obtaining your own homemade coffee. For successful fruiting, it is essential to provide the plant with a stable room temperature, permeable substrate, regular watering with standing water, and a resting period in a cooler room during winter.
