Overview
Crateva Adansonii Seeds 10 pcs Subtropical Tree with Fan-Shaped Flowers for Containers and Botanical Collections

The medium-sized pack of ten seeds of the species Crateva adansonii allows more experienced growers of tropical hardwoods to cultivate several young plants simultaneously and select the specimen with the best habit for future decoration of the winter garden or botanical exhibition. This sacred tree, known in India as varuna and in Africa as garlic pear, grows in a wide belt from Senegal through Mozambique to the Himalayas and the Philippines. Having multiple seeds makes sense also in relation to the lower germination rate of the species – from a dozen seeds, one can realistically expect three to six germinated plants.

A characteristic feature of the species is the striking bark structure, which peels off in rough brownish-grey plates in maturity, creating picturesque textured ridges across the trunk. The branches are twisted, with numerous short lateral shoots ending in leaves shaped like trifoliate rosettes. The flowers with cream-white petals appear light due to the long fan-shaped stamens topped with greenish anthers. In equatorial regions, the tree flowers before or alongside the emergence of new leaves, while in container culture here, it usually blooms in the second half of spring.

For sowing, it is essential to soak the seeds in warm water for two days before placing them in the substrate, optionally adding a few drops of a gibberellin solution to stimulate germination. The substrate can be a mixture of garden soil, coconut fibre, and pumice or perlite in a ratio of 2:1:1, which ensures moisture retention and adequate aeration of the root ball. Germination occurs at a stable temperature of 26–30 °C and constant moisture of the substrate, with the germination period usually taking two to eight weeks. After germination, it is advisable to keep the seedlings in partial shade and gradually acclimatise them for stronger direct light.

Contents of the package:

  • 10 pcs of Crateva adansonii seeds

A group of ten cultivated seeds is a suitable foundation for creating bonsai compositions, as the species tolerates regular pruning of branches, wiring, and gradual reduction of the root ball well. In tropical Africa, the tree is part of dietary customs – young leaves are consumed as a spinach side dish and contain a balanced ratio of proteins, vitamins, and minerals. In collector's orangeries and botanical gardens across Europe, Crateva adansonii is among the sought-after specimens of medium-sized subtropical hardwoods. For successful cultivation, it is necessary to ensure regular fertilisation during the active growth period, higher air humidity above 60%, and a temperature that never drops below 12 °C. After several years, the grower may obtain an impressive specimen with flowers or the first fruits.
