Overview
Chukrasia Tabularis Seeds 60 pcs Tropical Tree with Pink Flowers Known as Indian Mahogany for Greenhouse and Conservatory Cultivation

Chukrasia tabularis is a medium to tall deciduous tropical tree from the Meliaceae family, originally distributed in India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, China, and the countries of Indochina. In international trade, the wood is known as Chittagong wood or Burma almondwood and is considered one of the valuable tropical hardwoods similar to mahogany. This package contains 60 seeds for experimental cultivation of this rarely seen hardwood under European greenhouse conditions. In nature, it reaches a height of 20 to 30 metres with a straight trunk and a wide arched crown.

The tree bears large compound pinnate leaves with 10 to 16 pairs of leaflets, which have a glossy surface and a deep green colour typical of tropical representatives of the family. During the flowering period, rich terminal racemes of small pink to salmon-coloured flowers with a delicate fragrance appear at the ends of the branches, from which woody capsules with several seeds gradually develop. Chukrasia wood has a beautiful reddish-brown to honey colour with an attractive grain and is used in high-end furniture making, musical instruments, veneers, and luxury joinery carving.

Before sowing, it is advisable to soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 12 to 24 hours. They are sown shallowly into a permeable substrate with a higher sand content and germinate at a temperature of 25 to 30 °C within 2 to 6 weeks. Young seedlings grow rapidly, reaching up to 30 to 50 cm in height each year during the first few years. Indoors, the plant is grown in a deep container with good drainage, as it develops a strong root system. Chukrasia requires consistent warmth, plenty of light without direct midday sun, and regular watering during the growth period.

Bulk packaging of Chukrasia is advantageous for growers who want to increase the likelihood of successfully raising multiple individuals or plan larger experiments with the cultivation of this currently underrepresented hardwood in Europe. Younger plants can also be successfully shaped into tropical bonsai with attractive foliage and a characteristic crown silhouette. More mature specimens create an elegant solitaire in spacious conservatories or botanical collections. For successful long-term cultivation, a quality permeable substrate, regular watering with standing water, and a stable temperature above 15 °C even during the winter dormancy period are important. Additional care includes occasional fertilisation during the growing season and monitoring for potential pests such as mealybugs.
