Overview
Crossandra Infundibuliformis Seeds 5 pcs Tropical Houseplant with Orange Flowers for Indoor and Conservatory Cultivation

A set of five seeds of the tropical plant Crossandra infundibuliformis is a suitable starter pack for houseplant gardening enthusiasts who wish to enhance their interior with an unusual flowering shrub. The plant is considered sacred in its native countries, namely southern India and Sri Lanka, and its vivid orange flowers are used in Hindu rituals and as garlands to worship the gods. In European horticultural practice, it is encountered as an attractive long-flowering houseplant with a blooming period of up to nine months a year.

The plant forms a compact upright shrub growing indoors to a height of 30 to 60 centimetres, with shiny dark green leaves measuring 5 to 12 centimetres in length. The flowers arranged in dense spike-like inflorescences have a characteristic trumpet shape with four to five lobed petals of a rich orange colour with a yellowish centre, as visible in the photograph. The Latin species name infundibuliformis derives from the shape of the corolla tube, which resembles a small funnel (Latin infundibulum). Under suitable conditions, the crossandra blooms continuously for several months and creates an impressive floral display.

For successful sowing, it is essential to soak the seeds in warm water at a temperature of 30 degrees Celsius for twenty-four hours, which accelerates the germination process. The substrate should be light humus with the addition of perlite and coconut fibre, which retains moisture while ensuring drainage. The seeds are sown shallowly to a depth of no more than five millimetres, and the substrate is kept consistently moist at a temperature of 25 to 28 degrees Celsius. Germination typically occurs within two to four weeks, and the germination rate ranges from 40 to 60 percent depending on the seed quality and conditions.

  • 5 pcs of Crossandra infundibuliformis seeds

Crossandra infundibuliformis is valued in European horticulture as a modern alternative to classic flowering houseplants such as African violets or Kalanchoe, as it offers a much longer blooming period and less demanding care requirements. In the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, it is cultivated on commercial plantations for the production of garlands used to adorn hair, altars, and festive spaces during religious festivals. For successful cultivation, it is important to ensure high air humidity, regular fertilisation during the growing season, and protection from cold drafts in the winter months. From five seeds grown, one can realistically expect two to three healthy seedlings, which may already bloom in the first year. With good care, the plant can last indoors as a perennial flowering feature for several years.
