Coffea arabica Obatã Seeds 5 pcs Brazilian Coffee Variety for Growing at Home in a Room or Conservatory

Coffea arabica 'Obatã' is a popular Brazilian coffee variety that you can grow at home from fresh seeds. This pack of 5 seeds represents an entry supply for enthusiasts who wish to try cultivating this rarely available variant of arabica in European conditions. The Obatã variety was developed at the brazilian IAC institute through crossbreeding, which resulted in a combination of higher yields, more compact growth, and greater resistance to leaf rust. The name of the variety refers to a Yoruba deity from Afro-American religious traditions.

The tree, when mature, develops a direct compact habit with horizontally spreading branches growing from the main trunk. The leaves are oval-shaped, leathery, glossy, dark green, and arranged oppositely. The size of the leaves is usually larger than that of other arabica variants, which gives the plant an attractive dense crown when mature. The flowers are small and white, illuminating the entire tree with their jasmine fragrance, which is particularly noticeable in the evening hours of the spring season. After pollination, coffee cherries develop, ripening from green through orange to the deep red colour typical of ripe arabica.

For germination, it is advisable to soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours, or to slightly scarify the hard shell. They should be sown shallowly in a well-draining, slightly acidic substrate at a temperature between 26 and 30 °C. Germination is irregular and takes 4 to 8 weeks. Young seedlings grow slowly and require partial shade, higher humidity, and careful watering with standing water.

Growing Brazilian Obatã from seeds represents a valuable project for growers seeking a coffee plant with an interesting genetic history and good productivity. After 3 to 5 years, the young coffee plant may begin to flower and produce its first coffee cherries, from which you can prepare beans for your own roasting. This variety is also popular for its relatively easy care, making it a suitable choice even for less experienced growers. For successful growth, regular watering, a well-draining substrate, and a sunny partial shade location are important. During the winter months, the plant is moved to a cooler room with a temperature around 13 °C, and watering is significantly reduced to maintain its natural growth rhythm.
