Overview
Celosia Argentea Var. Cristata Red 50 Seeds Annual with Red Crested Flowers for Borders and Pots

Celosia argentea var. cristata Red, commonly known as red cockscomb, is an attractive annual originating from the warm regions of tropical Asia and Africa. This plant is sought after for its unmistakable flower heads resembling a rooster's comb, which in this variety are coloured in an intense red shade. This pack contains 50 seeds for personal planting in borders, on balconies, or in pots. When mature, the plant reaches a height of 30 to 50 cm and forms compact clumps with deep green lanceolate leaves.

The seeds are sown in spring in a warm sowing substrate, typically from March to April. They germinate quite quickly at a temperature of 20 to 25 °C, with the first sprouts appearing within a week. Once germinated, the seedlings should be pricked out and planted in a permanent location after the risk of spring frosts has passed in mid-May. Cockscomb thrives in sunny conditions, prefers a well-drained humus-rich substrate, and requires regular watering during dry periods.

The main attraction of this plant is undoubtedly its bizarre flower heads. The crested spikes with undulating shapes draw attention with their plush velvety texture and vibrant red colour with a slight purplish hue. The flowers last on the plant from mid-summer until the first autumn frosts and are suitable for cutting and drying, as they retain their shape and colour even after drying. Therefore, the plant is often used in arrangements of dried bouquets and autumn decorations.

Growing cockscomb is rewarding even for beginner gardeners, as the plant is resilient, easy to propagate, and flowers for a relatively long time. In combination with green foliage and contrasting flower heads, it is suitable as a solitary plant or as a component in border plantings alongside other annuals. It is advisable to water the plant regularly and moderately, as it does not tolerate extreme dryness or permanently waterlogged substrate around the roots. After flowering, some flower stalks can be removed to encourage the formation of new blooms, or they can be left to fully mature for seed collection. To achieve the most abundant flowering, a sunny location, moderate watering, and quality garden substrate are sufficient.
