A balaclava covers the head, the neck and, depending on the cut, part of the face or the whole face except the eyes. It is thin and close-fitting, so it does not get in the way under the helmet, yet it reliably keeps the cold out on the lift and on fast runs.
The material matters. Technical synthetic knits wick moisture and dry quickly, merino wool stays warm even when damp and resists odours, and fleece gives the most warmth in severe cold. Windproof panels around the mouth and nose protect against icy wind, while breathable mesh makes breathing easier and reduces goggle fogging.
There are several cuts: the classic balaclava with a face opening, versions with a fold-down mouth section and 3-in-1 balaclavas that can be worn as a balaclava, neck warmer or hat. Separate neck warmers and thin helmet liners are handy when a full balaclava is not needed.
A balaclava should fit snugly without pressing under the helmet, so it pays to choose the right size. Children's sizes with flat seams are appreciated even by the youngest skiers.
