The game is set on the Western Front between 1914 and 1918, in one of the bloodiest conflicts in world history – inspired by the infamous Battle of Verdun in 1916.
Verdun is the first multiplayer FPS set in a realistic environment of the First World War, a game that launched the WW1 Game series. The malicious nature of close-quarters trench warfare means that skill with a bayonet can be as important as good aim with a rifle.
The game offers 4 distinct game modes with many historically accurate features, such as realistic weapons from the First World War, authentic uniforms, horrific blood effects, and maps based on real battlefields in France and Belgium. The dynamic Frontlines game mode features 64 players who alternate to overcome the peak and attempt to capture the enemy trench line.
This game in this authentic First World War battlefield experience is as immersive and bold as it can be, with features such as optional realistic blood that displays the true horrors of the First World War, and authentic weapons including artillery and gas. Weapons must be handled skillfully – each weapon operates differently and there are no floating crosshairs to help you aim, along with realistic bullet physics that you must contend with.
Fight your way across no man's land to capture the next enemy trench line before switching to defence to protect your gains in the Frontlines game mode. In the case of artillery strikes or gas attacks, keep your head down or quickly don your mask. This relentless war is not for the faint-hearted!
The WW1 game series currently includes Verdun, Tannenberg set on the Eastern Front, and Isonzo, which takes place on the Italian Front. These authentic First World War shooters allow players to choose from a range of units from across the war as they fight for control over the ever-changing frontlines.
For Verdun, we conducted extensive field research on the battlefield itself and were educated by historians to ensure that the individual elements in Verdun are as historically accurate as they can be. Uniforms have been recreated down to the smallest details, weapons are modelled after precise references, and maps utilise realistic props and terrain layout. Everything in the game has been tailored to recreate the grim atmosphere so typical of WW1, from the immersive interface and war maps to the realistic sounds and voices that evoke the feeling of actually being there in the mud-covered trenches, peering over no man's land in search of the enemy.
