Release Date: 18/05/2023
Red Barrels invites you to experience mind-numbing terror, this time with friends. Whether you face the trials alone or in teams, if you survive long enough to complete the therapy, Murkoff will happily let you go… but will you be the same?
Set during the Cold War, human guinea pigs are involuntarily recruited by the good people of Murkoff Corporation to test advanced methods of brainwashing and mind control. In a world of distrust, fear, and violence, your morality will be challenged, your resilience tested, and your mental health crushed. All in the name of progress, science, and profit.
SURVIVE: SOLO OR CO-OP
You are all Murkoff's prisoners trapped in their facility. You can choose to complete the trials alone, or tackle them in a team of 2, 3, or 4 players.
Co-op is never forced when it comes to mandatory objectives, but collaboration can be very beneficial.
No matter how many players are in your party, the goal is to survive and get out.
Ultimately, your aim is to complete Murkoff's therapy and earn the right to be released back into society. To do this, you must complete the trials and MK challenges.
The trials are immersive story-driven therapies that take a certain amount of time to complete. MK-Challenges are shorter therapies occurring in modified or reworked sections of existing maps.
HIDE OR RUN
In true Outlast fashion, the core gameplay revolves around avoiding enemies, hiding from them, and trying to escape. Murkoff will provide tools that you can use to enhance your stealth abilities, create opportunities for escape, slow down enemies, and more. However, you will need to earn these tools and work hard to upgrade them.
These tools will allow you to
- Stun enemies
- Blind them
- See through walls
- Heal yourself and those around you.
Murkoff will ask you to perform disturbing tasks in each test or MK challenge. Only after completing them will you be able to leave the trials or MK-Challenges.
CHARACTER CUSTOMISATION
Customise and create your own test subject.
Your cell is your home, and while you complete therapy, you can decorate it however you like.
Choose tools, upgrades, and perks to suit your playstyle.
Meet the residents of Murkoff's Sinyala Facility in The Outlast Trials. Each of them will try to help you get through the trials in one piece! Do you think you can manage it?
INVESTIGATE
You have been abducted by Murkoff Corporation to undergo unethical experiments that will alter your psyche and behaviour during the trials.
Collect documents and items that will help prove Murkoff's neglect towards its patients.
Process:
- Break the Self: Murkoff aims to shatter the core beliefs of the test subject. Aspects of one's identity are systematically attacked. Just like a boot camp or indoctrination, the goal is to force a person to purge everything considered sacred or taboo, from things that restrict their behaviour. A constant assault on identity, guilt, and self-betrayal ultimately leads to their disintegration.
- Build the Self: This is the bad cop, the good cop principle. The rejection of the old ideology leaves a vacuum into which a new ideology can be introduced. As a counterpoint to the old ideology, it creates a perfect attractive point when a person flees from the old in search of a contrasting replacement. This progress is accelerated as the new ideology is portrayed as harmonious and ideally suited to the individual's needs. Collegiality and calm are replaced by pain and punishment. Just at the moment when the individual fears the destruction of their self, a small kindness is offered, a brief relief from the assault on their identity.
- Salvation: Faced with the sharp contrast of past pain against the rosy glow of the future that the new ideology represents, a person sheds their last loyalty to the old ideology, confesses all remaining deep secrets, and adopts the entire cloak of the new ideology. This is often felt and described by many as a form of rebirth. It may be accompanied by rites of passage as the person is accepted and integrated into the new order. Rites typically involve strong declarations of full and complete acceptance of the new ideology and pledging loyalty to its leaders. Saluting flags, kissing other artifacts, and other symbolic acts, all performed ceremoniously, firmly anchor them in the new land.
