Exploration
There are ten distinct areas for you to explore, each with its own unique set of enemies and obstacles. If you are willing to search every nook and cranny in each area, you will uncover plenty of secrets and earn well-deserved rewards. Through your exploration, you will gain significant upgrades in the form of relics, emblems, and enhancements to your health or mind points. These upgrades will undoubtedly be valuable for any player. To learn more about these enhancements, check out the combat section!
Combat
Combat in Lone Fungus is streamlined, yet has depth when it comes to customisation. You can, for example, deflect anything that would normally harm you, but notably, deflecting incoming projectiles sends them back at enemies. However, you are never forced to deflect, and you can even change how the deflection system works by equipping emblems!
Emblems are items that you find throughout the world. Equipping an emblem can change the behaviour of deflected projectiles; for example, you can make them hit enemies but deal less damage. Alternatively, instead of deflecting a projectile off your cap, you can deal damage to anything nearby. There is even a Vortex Emblem that destroys several projectiles around the player.
Upgrades and Customisation Builds
In addition to Emblems, there are Relics that function very similarly to the Charm system in Hollow Knight. Some change how your healing works, and others increase sword damage or provide additional protection. There are 60 Relics in the game, and through Relics, you choose what your strengths will be. You can create truly specialised builds focusing on defence, healing, speed, melee attack, or spellcasting!
And then there are permanent upgrades that you gain by defeating bosses, ranging from spells to new moves and types of attacks!
Bosses
In Lone Fungus, you can challenge and defeat 28 bosses to gain new abilities. My goal is to design engaging and fair boss battles that can be won without the boss taking any damage. To achieve this, I create distinct attack patterns for each boss and provide clear cues before their strikes. Additionally, I limit the randomness of their attacks. My aim is to provide an enjoyable and stimulating experience where players can overcome bosses by mastering their techniques.
Platforming
Lone Fungus is essentially a precision platformer, but it does not force you to engage in overly difficult platforming tasks to progress in the game. Instead, all platforming challenges are confined to optional side rooms, allowing you to enjoy the game as a combat and exploration-focused Metroidvania while still benefiting from the precise controls of a platformer. However, if you tend to master the hardcore mechanics of the game, there are practice rooms available where you can hone your skills and tackle the most challenging platforming challenges the game has to offer.
