A war has been waged throughout the kingdom of Myrtana. Orc hordes have invaded human territory, and the king of the land needed a lot of ore to create enough weapons to face this threat with his army. Anyone who breaks the law in these darkest times is condemned to serve in the giant penal colony of Khorinis, where they mine the much-needed ore.
The entire area, nicknamed the "Colony", is surrounded by a magical barrier, a sphere two kilometres in diameter, that protects the penal colony from the outside world. The barrier can be crossed from the outside in – but once inside, no one can escape. The barrier was a double-edged sword – soon the prisoners took the opportunity and started a rebellion. The colony split into three rival factions, and the king was forced to negotiate for his ore rather than just demand it.
You are thrown over the barrier into this prison. With your back against the wall, you must survive and forge unstable alliances until you eventually manage to escape.
