Empires of the Undergrowth is a real-time strategy game focused on managing ant colonies. Players dig their nest underground, building tunnels and chambers for food storage and breeding offspring. Above ground, ants claim territory, gather resources, overcome terrifying arachnids, and clash with other colonies. The design of the nest, the size of the army, the composition, and the timing of the attack are key to securing victory.
Missions are narrated from the perspective of a documentary filmmaker studying ants, providing insightful commentary on the happenings within the colony and the undergrowth around it. The primary game mode in early access is Formicarium, where you take ownership of a home colony of unique DNA-harvesting ants that work to assimilate desirable traits from their enemies. You can upgrade them by playing one-off missions, sometimes with your home colony and sometimes with other species of ants.
