Roguelike, Rogue-lite, roguelike-like, rogueschmike! No matter what you call them, the world can always use more! As such, we would like to introduce you to the love child of roguelike and metroidvania, RogueVANIA. After all, enough with the sales pitches, let’s take a closer look.

MetroidVania truly speaks to a solid, hand-crafted, interconnected world. The game takes place on a vast island that never changes. All biomes, bosses, and paths between them are present right from the start. Getting to them is another story...

In Dead Cells, however, death replaces the traditional backtracking mechanic of metroidvania. Initially, seemingly unreachable areas will block your path, but the answers to these puzzles will appear as you explore the island. Whether it’s a key, a new acrobatic skill, or a forgotten spell. Once revealed, this knowledge will remain with you, allowing you to unlock new paths to your goal. Tired of the stinking sewers? Make your way over the ramparts and take a breath of fresh air! It’s your skill, play style, and of course the loot you find that will determine your path.

Moreover, as the term “RogueVania” might (not so) subtly suggest, we have also been quite heavily influenced by the recent wave of roguelites. When there are no checkpoints to save you from your troubles, adrenaline kicks in. And when you lose, you lose a lot, so you must escape alive. Instead of relying on the classic formula of memorising level design and enemy placements, procedural generation allows us to reward your instincts, reflexes, and ability to adapt to evolving situations.

That said, we are aware that the words “procedural generation” conjure images of miserable levels and uninspired games in the minds of many players. We have therefore opted for a hybrid solution, with each run being a mix of carefully designed “chunks” of levels. The aim is to provide you with the feeling of a precisely hand-crafted world while ensuring that you experience something new every time.

However, do not expect it to be a walk in the park. Pattern-based monsters and challenging boss battles will teach you to choose your fights and build your strength. Each weapon has its own unique feel, and rolling and dodging will become second nature as you learn to manage the hordes of monsters that will overwhelm the unprepared. We are going for that “hard but fair” feeling.

Tired of violence and death? Explore a little, take a stroll, enjoy the view from the ramparts, find a secret room. Thomas and Gwen, our graphic designers, never miss an opportunity to impress with their pixel art and create a world worth exploring. You might even learn a bit more about the lore of this place, who knows?
