Roguelike, Rogue-lite, roguelike-like, rogueschmike! No matter what you call them, the world can always use more! As such, we would like to introduce you to the love child of roguelike and metroidvania, RogueVANIA. After all, enough with the sales pitches, let’s take a closer look.


MetroidVania truly speaks to a solid, handcrafted, interconnected world. The game takes place on a massive island that never changes. All biomes, bosses, and the paths between them are present right from the start. Getting to them is another story...

In Dead Cells, however, death replaces the traditional backtracking mechanic of metroidvania. At first, you will encounter seemingly unreachable areas along your path, but the answers to these puzzles will reveal themselves as you explore the island. Whether it’s a key, a new acrobatic skill, or a forgotten spell. Once uncovered, this knowledge will remain with you and allow you to unlock new paths to your goal. Tired of the stinking sewers? Head over the ramparts and take a breath of fresh air! It’s your skill, playstyle, and of course, the loot you find that will determine your path.

Moreover, as the term “RogueVania” might (not so) subtly suggest, we have also been quite heavily influenced by the recent wave of roguelites. When there are no checkpoints to save you from your troubles, adrenaline kicks in. And when you lose, you lose a lot, so you have to make it out alive. Instead of relying on the classic formula of memorising level design and enemy placements, our procedural generation allows us to reward your instincts, reflexes, and ability to adapt to evolving situations.

We are aware that the words “procedural generation” conjure images of miserable levels and uninteresting games in the minds of many players. Therefore, we opted for a hybrid solution, with each run being a mix of carefully designed “chunks” of levels. The goal is to provide you with the feeling of a precisely handcrafted world while ensuring that you experience something new each time.

However, don’t expect it to be a walk in the park. Pattern-based monsters and challenging boss fights will teach you to choose your battles and build your strength. Each weapon has its own unique feel, and rolling and dodging will become second nature as you learn to manage the hordes of monsters that will overwhelm the unprepared. We are going for that “hard but fair” feeling.

Tired of violence and death? Take a little time to explore, stroll around, enjoy the view from the ramparts, find a secret room. Thomas and Gwen, our artists, never miss an opportunity to impress with their pixel art and create a world worth exploring. You might even learn a bit more about the lore of this place, who knows?
