As a man or woman, you will crash land, naked, frozen, and hungry on the shores of a mysterious island called ARK. You must hunt, gather resources, craft items, grow crops, discover technologies, and build shelters to withstand the elements. Use your cunning and resources to kill or tame and breed colossal dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures that roam the land. Collaborate or prey on hundreds of other players to survive, dominate... and escape!
The following features and characteristics have been in the game since the first day of early access release. We plan many more aspects and improvements on the long-term development roadmap, and here is what you are currently experiencing in ARK:
TAME, TRAIN, BREED AND RIDE DINOSAURS IN A LIVING ECOSYSTEM
Dinosaurs, animals, and their breeding! -- over 50 species in early access and more than 100 planned for the final version -- can be tamed through a challenging capture process involving weakening wild creatures, knocking them unconscious, and nursing them back to health with appropriate food. Tamed animals can be controlled, which may depend on how well they were tamed and trained. They can level up and consume food, and they can also carry inventory and equipment such as armour, as well as bring loot back to base depending on their strength, with larger animals being rideable. You can fly a pterodactyl over snowy mountains, pick up allies over enemy walls, race raptors through the jungle, stomp your way through an enemy base on a massive brontosaurus, or chase prey on the back of a raging T-Rex!
You will be part of a dynamic ecosystem with your own hierarchy of predator versus prey, where you will be just another creature among other species fighting for dominance and survival. Tamed animals can be bred with the opposite sex for successful selective breeding, mixing their traits based on genetics and heredity. This process involves both the egg incubation phase and the baby phase and its development! Or you can simply breed and raise dino babies!
FOOD, WATER, TEMPERATURE AND WEATHER
You must eat and drink to survive. Different types of plants and meats have different nutritional values, including human flesh. Ensuring a supply of water to your dwelling and inventory is one of the most urgent matters. All physical activities consume water or food. Travelling long distances is therefore almost an existential issue! Heavy inventory will slow you down, and day and night cycles along with random weather fluctuations bring an additional level of challenges in the form of changing environmental temperatures, which will cause you to become hungry and thirsty much faster. Build a campfire or shelter and craft a wide range of customisable clothing and armour to help protect you from local injuries and extreme temperatures, which depend on dynamic calculations of insulation values for interiors and exteriors!
GATHER, BUILD STRUCTURES, PAINT ITEMS
By chopping down forests full of trees and mining metal and other rare resources, you can create parts to build massive multi-level structures, made up of pieces that are connected using attachment points, including ramps, beams, pillars, windows, doors, gates, remotely controlled gates, trapdoors, plumbing, taps, generators, all sorts of electrical devices, ladders, and other items. Construction parts can be destroyed if they do not have sufficient foundation support, so reinforcing building foundations is very important. All construction elements and items can be painted to beautify your home, as well as pixel-by-pixel paintable signs, text billboards, and other decorative objects. Shelters reduce weather extremes and provide you and your hideout with safety. Weapons, clothing, and armour can also be painted to express your personal visual style.
PLANT, GROW AND HARVEST
Collect seeds from wild vegetation around you, plant them in the beds you have established, water them, and care for them with fertilisation (all after consuming calories, which you can compost. Some fertilisers are better than others). Take care of your crops. They will grow and produce delicious and rare fruits that can be used to cook an endless variety of recipes and useful tonics! Explore to find the rarest plant seeds that have the strongest properties! Vegetarians and vegans can thrive and conquer ARK in a non-violent way!
SUMMON THE PEAK FORMS OF LIFE
By bringing enough rare artefacts to special summoning locations, you can attract the attention of one of ARK's mythical creatures that will arrive for battle. These massive beasts provide the ultimate gameplay challenge for the most experienced groups of players and their armies of tamed animals. These beasts drop extremely valuable items if defeated.
TRIBE SYSTEM
Create a tribe and add friends, and all your animals can then be managed and allied with anyone in your tribe. Your tribe will also be able to respawn at any home spawn points. Promote members to tribe administrators to reduce the burden of managing the tribe. Place key items and passwords to provide access to your shared base!
RPG STATISTICS
All items created from blueprints that have diverse properties and qualities require corresponding resources. Remote and harsher environments throughout ARK tend to have richer resources, including the highest mountains, darker caves, and deeper oceans. Improve your character by gaining experience through performing various activities, training tamed animals, and learning new "engrams" so you can craft items from memory without using blueprints, even when you die. Customise the basic physical appearance of your character by adjusting hair, eyes, and skin tone along with numerous body proportion modifiers.
HARDCORE MECHANICS
Everything you craft has a certain lifespan and will wear out from frequent use unless repaired. When you log out of the game, your character remains asleep while the world continues to flow. Your inventory physically exists in boxes or on your character in the world. Everything can be looted and stolen, so for greater security, you must band together, build, or have tamed animals to guard your hideout. Death is permanent. You can knock out, capture, and forcibly feed other players to use them for your own purposes, such as extracting their blood for transfusions, harvesting their faeces for fertiliser, or using them as food for your carnivorous animals!
EXAMINE AND DISCOVER
The mysterious ARK is a vast and imposing environment, composed of many natural and unnatural structures above ground, underground, and underwater. By fully exploring all the secrets of ARK, you will find procedurally generated creatures and rare blueprints for building things. You may also find notes from various explorers, written by ancient human inhabitants of ARK from previous millennia, creatively and detailly describing various creatures, stories of ARK's past, and its creations. Discover the entire map of ARK by exploring the landscape, marking your locations on the map, crafting compasses or GPS for easier exploration with other players, with whom you can communicate via text and voice, or over long distances with radio. Craft and describe signs for other players to help them or lead them astray... and just by the way... how will you deal with the challenges of the creators and conquerors of ARK? A definitive ending to the game is planned.
A LARGE, PERSISTENT WORLD AND PARALLEL UNIVERSE
On more than 100 servers, your character, everything you have built, and your pets will remain in the game even when you log out. You can even transfer your character and items between the ARK network by accessing an obelisk and uploading (or downloading) your data from the Steam Economy! There are indeed a large number of ARK servers, and each is slightly different from the others. From time to time, there is a time-limited themed event on the servers that adds some themed items for a limited time!
ROBUST STEAM WORKSHOP AND MOD SUPPORT
You can play in single-player and transfer your character and items between unofficial servers from single-player to multiplayer. You can also mod the game with full support from Steam Workshop and in the custom Unreal Engine 4 editor. Check out how we created the basic ARK map and get inspired. Powerful hyper-realistic depiction of the world of ARK and its creations is brought to expressive life using a highly configurable game engine, Unreal Engine 4, along with fully dynamic lighting, global illumination, weather systems (rain, water, snow, etc.), and realistic cloud simulation, as well as advanced rendering techniques using DirectX11 and DirectX12. The music is by award-winning composer of "Ori and the Blind Forest," Gareth Coker!
